Headteacher's Update - Friday 4 September 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

Please see some updates below.

Face coverings in school

As we come to the end of the first week of wearing face coverings in social areas and when moving around the building, I must report this has gone very well. Overall our learners have excelled in managing this through the day. Could I please ask for your support on two important points:

  1. Please ensure your child remembers their mask each day. We have issued over 500 masks and coverings this week alone. Over 300 of these were reusable face coverings.
  2. At interval and lunch time, face coverings should be put on once learners have finished eating and drinking.
  3. Outdoor spaces should be used when ever possible.

Consultation and changes

Thank you to all those who recently completed our Covid-19 Consultation questionnaire. With nearly 450 responses, this allows us to hear the voice of families and in turn take action that is informed by this voice. To this end, from Monday 7 September, practical work in the DET workshops will be reintroduced (mainly with those doing SQA courses). During these times, learners will wear their face covering (supported by 94% of respondents).

The introduction of staggering morning interval was also strongly supported (92%).  As of yesterday, we have introduced a similar model to lunch time. Having seen the reality of this change yesterday, it was excellent to give our learners more space indoors during these times.

To further support breaks and intervals more comfortably, we are exploring the purchasing of additional indoor seating as well as new outdoor benches.

Headteacher’s 5-a-day

From Monday 14 September, I will be aiming to meet with 5 learners each day to allow me to know them better, to give them a chance to know me better and to allow me to hear what their views are of our school. Information will be shared with staff about how learners can opt into this process next week. This will be in addition to the weekly Friday morning meeting I have with the School Captains.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable weekend.
